With over a half century in caps for the Canberra-based side, Speight has the potential to punish opposition defensive errors from all over the park and draws fans to the edge of their seats when he gets the ball.
Speight is the only uncapped member of Australia’s initial Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship squad, and will unfortunately miss the opening three games of the tournament before becoming eligible to represent Australia from September 11, 2014.
This means he will be eligible for the final two matches against Argentina (Perth and Mendoza); against South Africa in Cape Town; and also for the third and final Bledisloe Cup clash in Brisbane.
Despite his ineligibility, Speight has been fast-tracked into the Qantas Wallabies squad by coach Ewen McKenzie, and was chosen to train with the group throughout the Castrol EDGE France Tour in June.
The try-scoring sensation was in incredible form during the backend of the Super Rugby competition and the standout during the Brumbies win over the Chiefs in the Super Rugby Qualifying Final, running for 183 metres and making 13 tackle busts.
Speight scored 19 tries in his first three season with the Brumbies and started 2014 in similar fashion before being injury ruled him out during the opening part of their campaign.
He is known for his work off the ball, finishing ability and all round toughness. He broke his jaw in two places against the Waratahs in their 2014 Round 5 clash, also his 50th game for the province. After singing the team song that night, Speight then turned up at Brumbies training less than 48 hours after having his second operation of the week, involving three metal plates and eight screws.
It is not the first time he has ignored pain, playing through most of the 2012 season with a knee injury after joining the Brumbies following a stint for Waikato in New Zealand’s ITM Cup.
Speight, nicknamed “Silky”, is the Brumbies’ quiet achiever with a try-scoring nous and a unique attacking flair which has transformed him into one of the most sought after wingers in the game.
He finished his schooling in Hamilton after now Welsh coach Warren Gatland lured him to Waikato in 2008 and the winger with an incredible left-right step has now found home in Australia.
Speight spends plenty of time giving back to Rugby, taking time in his holidays to mentor Fijian U18 team in Sydney, the same side which opened the door to his career.
