After leaving Australia for Japan in 2009 having never played a game of Super Rugby, SCOTT FARDY thought his Australian Rugby dream had ended.
However, that dream was realised in 2013 when Fardy earned a place in coach Ewen McKenzie’s initial 40-man Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship squad, before winning selection in the opening Bledisloe Cup Test match of the year.
Proving you could teach an old dog new tricks, Fardy went on to feature in all six Rugby Championship matches last year, while he ended his debut year with 10 Test appearance, nine of those in the starting team at blindside flanker.
It was a remarkable journey for Fardy to reach that point.
Fardy spent a season with the Western Force academy in 2008 without playing a game, before heading overseas. The rangy lock found favour with Japanese club Kamaishi Seawaves but was forced to return to Australia when his village was wiped out by the 2011 tsunami.
He was added to the 2012 ACT Brumbies extended player squad, before being offered a full-time contract midway through that season.
Fardy was a regular feature of the Brumbies in 2013, providing starch in defence as they finished runners up to the Chiefs. He was also a valuable member of the side that made history, becoming the first Australian club side to defeat the British & Irish Lions since Queensland in 1971.
Comfortable as a lock or loose forward, Fardy earned the coveted Ken Catchpole Medal for the Shute Shield’s ‘best and fairest’ player in 2008 as a member of the Warringah Rats. Prior to his first-grade start, he played 300 games for the Newport Dolphins as a junior.
Fardy also played representative baseball for New South Wales until he was 16 years old.
